An understanding of how my training methodologies, philosophies, and my passion working with athletes drives me to perfect my craft.
A look into my work as a strength and conditioning coach and how I help deliver the best performance training to athletes.
As a professional kinesiologist and former athlete, one of my greatest skill sets is working cohesively with physiotherapists in the recovery of injured athletes.
The science of sport is evolving at a quick pace and therefore requires constant adaptation to stay on top. My goal is to always be pushing to improve the training techniques and programming I prescribe my athletes. In order to do this I put an abundance of effort into continuing my education in all topics of current exercises science research. The precise programming I create for athletes is the foundation necessary to be a successful strength coach, and most importantly to provide the athlete with the ability to reach their highest potential.
I believe that training must have a very specific approach in order to advance each athlete in the respective sport. No matter how much science I can incorporate into the planning of an athletes training program, being able to push the athlete and execute the work is the critical key to enhancing their success. The way I achieve this is by building meaningful relationships with each athlete, giving them the assurance and confidence that I will do whatever it takes to help them succeed.
My passion as a strength and conditioning coach is derived from my competitiveness as a former hockey player and athlete. This athletic background influences the environment I create for athletes and teams, ultimately assisting in their ability to physiologically and emotionally overcome the high demands that are required of them in competition. To this day I continue to push myself in all of my athletic training, research, and education. By doing so I’m able to better understand the movements and stressors I prescribe for all the athletes I train. I fully believe I must be able to practice what I preach!
Working as a strength and conditioning coach has many complex roles. It starts by ensuring that the programs I have created for each athlete evolving and adaptable to their unique needs. Once I’ve created the programs I need to constantly analyze their performance to ensure they are moving perfectly and without any possible deficiencies. Another component to my role is also making sure the training programs and the environment I create for the athletes/teams are highly motivating. All of these factors in creating a successful strength and training program is only achieved by having exceptional communication with everyone who’s a part of the team.
My approach when building individualized training programs is to first gather information about each athlete and then put them through a series of sport specific test. This allows me to then manipulate my sport specific blueprints and create a very tailored training program. Ultimately giving athletes a program that will have them training more efficiently and specific to their strengths and weaknesses.
Implementing various markers in a program is necessary to ensure that all athletes are progressing along the desired timeline I’ve created. There are multiple ways I choose to track an athlete, which includes; individual data from training sessions, interviewing athletes to better understand how they mental and physical feel, closely analyzing their movements during training and competition settings, and periodically re-testing their baseline results.
Injuries of varying degree are inevitably going to be apart of each athletes experience in competition. My first goal is to obviously diminish or eliminate the occurrence of injuries through proper training practices. If an athlete does experience an injury it is my job to work alongside physiotherapy and medical staff to help rehab and recondition the athlete. I’ve worked with so many different types of injuries and have great confidence in creatively manipulating an athletes training program so they can continue to excel in returning strong and conditioned. Working with injured athletes also require a lot of energy in strategically motivating them during those difficult times. My positive energy becomes one of the most important factors during this reconditioning phase, pushing the athlete to return mentally and physically strong!
